So how does a Christian or anyone else who is lacking go about finding wisdom and understanding?
[1] Fear Almighty God
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1:7).
The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
God reveals Himself to those who respectfully fear Him. Fear meaning having reverence, adoration, honor and actually worshiping Him through prayer, praise and honorable actions.
Children respectfully fear their earthly parents. The Holy Bible teaches that those who seek the Lord “understand all things”:
Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things (Proverbs 28:5).
[2] Ask God for Wisdom and Understanding
King Solomon prayed to the Lord for an understanding heart in order to judge God’s chosen people: the nation of Israel (1 Kings 3).
The Lord was pleased with Solomon’s unselfish prayer and blessed Israel’s king with a wise and understanding heart equal to or surpassing any wise man who ever lived.
Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee (1 Kings 3:12).
[3] Seek the Kingdom of God First
Solomon sought the kingdom of God first. The Lord was so pleased with Solomon that he added riches and honor to the king: what Solomon had not asked for. This echoes what the Lord God Jesus taught during the Sermon on the Mount:
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).
[4] Read the Book of Proverbs - 1 Chapter or more Per Day
By reading the Book of Proverbs one becomes wise in the ways of the Lord.
Proverbs is replete with valuable life lessons on topics like how to get and maintain wisdom and understanding, to live single or in marriage, avoiding laziness, recognizing traps set by ungodly people for the gullible, dealing with substance abuse, finances, raising children, etc.
[5] Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
You’ve got to want wisdom and understanding and be hungry and thirsty for righteousness so that the Lord will always help and show you how to provide for your table when He tests you.
This includes listening to wise counsel, avoiding unwise people and loving instruction.
Whether you’re young, middle-aged or an elder, then hungering and thirsting for righteousness is always good for obtaining wisdom enough for entering the coming kingdom of God.
The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry, but He denies the craving of the wicked (Proverbs 10:3).
