Yes, Jesus was really King of the Jews. But not only was the final king of the Jewish people, He is King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5; 19:16).
He will return, take His throne, render His judgment and reign over the everlasting Kingdom of God as the world's final ruler.
Being Almighty God born in to the world, incarnated in the man Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior prophetically fulfilled Jesus as the King of the Jews (John 1:1-14).
Jesus Was Actually Crowned “King of the Jews”
Jesus was not crowned in an official royal ceremony like other kings of Israel. But remember that He was coronated by the soldiers who kept Him: the Romans who also mocked Christ before He was crucified.
They coronated Him with a crown of thorns, plus cloaked Him with an expensive purple robe and made a sign that said, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS” (Matthew 27:28; Luke 22:11; Mark 15:17; John 19).
The elite Jewish people who hated Jesus tried to get the Roman Governor of occupied Israel named Pontius Pilate to change the sign to say, “He Said He Was King of the Jews.” But Pilate refused.
So a leading member of the pagan Holy Roman Empire actually helped fulfill the prophesy about Jesus being King of the Jews (Zechariah 9:9-13; Matthew 21:5).
Let’s go over another criterion that qualifies Jesus to be the eternal King of the Jews and of the Universe.
Jesus Was Born into the Hebrew Israelite Jewish Royal Dynasty Tribe of Judah
Jesus was born into the legendary Hebrew Israelite tribe or family known as Judah - one of the 12 tribes of Israel.
This makes Jesus as Almighty God the Creator, the root or progenitor of King David. And as a man, an offspring of King David who was also born into the tribe of Judah (John 17:42; Revelation 5:5, 22:16).
God promised King David that David’s descendants would never lack a king to sit on the royal dynasty's throne (1 Kings 2:4; Jeremiah 33:20-21, etc.).
So Israel's kings after David were all from Judah - the House of King David’s dynasty.
Judah Was Blessed to Fulfill Prophesy in the Holy Bible
David’s tribe of Judah is the one his ancestor Jacob aka Israel blessed on his death bed and prophesied that it would birth a lineage of kings leading to the virgin birth of the Messiah, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ:
8 "Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee.
9 Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be" (Genesis 49:8-10).
In the Holy Bible, Jacob was Isaac’s son and Abraham’s grandson.
It was God Himself who changed Jacob’s name to Israel. Thus, making Jacob the namesake patriarch of the Hebrew Israelite nation described in the Bible.
Jacob’s children, grandchildren and posterity were known as the children of Israel.
12 of Jacob’s sons were patriarchs of the 12 Tribes or clans of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Gad, Napthali, Asher, Joseph, Benjamin, Dan and Judah.
Jacob blessed the tribe of Judah by christening it as “a lion’s whelp” and also said that the royal dynasty shall remain exclusively with Judahites.
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.”
Conclusion
Jesus checks off all of the boxes for the king of the Jews.
And He was actually crowned King of the Jews – just not in an official royal ceremony like, say, King David or King Solomon.
But yes beloved, Jesus really was King of the Jews.
Long live the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
